LHHS family and consumer science students win medals at state
Lake Havasu High School has a chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America). The organization’s mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through family and consumer sciences education, and they hold competitive events to test the skill and training of student members. Eight LHHS students went to state competition in Mesa, Arizona on April 20-21. Eight students went, and eight students came home with medals. Two qualified for nationals.
Each year, FCCLA national headquarters sets a theme for the year’s activities. This year’s theme is “Stepping Into the Spotlight,” and our medal winning students have done just that. Student Daniel's entry in the Entrepreneurship event earned a gold medal, a $1000 scholarship, and the right to compete in nationals. Daniel presented his plan for a preschool business, including a business plan, budget, and a plan for complying with codes and regulations. He explained his plan to the judges with a portfolio and power point presentation.
Students Paige and Bryana won bronze medals in the Chapter Showcase Display event. Using their public speaking skills, they showcased the many events and projects the LHHS chapter of FCCLA was involved in over the past year, including:
- Fundraisers for the Children of Hope program raised money to buy Christmas gifts for foster children.
- Assisted in the Party to the Max event, a fundraiser to help a Thunderbolt staff member with medical bills.
- Staged a fashion show to help the Lake Havasu Food Bank.
- Hosted birthday parties in exchange for tax credit donations.
Fashion design students Ashlee, Kyli, and Carla individually competed in the Fashion Construction division. They demonstrated their knowledge and skills in design and construction as they presented to a panel of judges. Kyli earned a gold medal and qualified for nationals with her Coco Channel inspired dress and jacket. Ashlee displayed her original design and Carla a two piece costume. Each proudly earned a bronze medal.
Early childhood education students Katie and Lauren competed individually in the Early Childhood category. The event required students to prepare and present a portfolio demonstrating their work experience in early childhood education and their skill level and developmental knowledge of early childhood education by creating detailed lesson plans and work samples. The judges choose a curriculum and developmental area for each competitor. After a timed preparation period, Katie presented a lesson in science and Lauren a story time and gross motor skills lesson. Each won a bronze medal.
FCCLA members have started planning activities for 2009-2010 when the theme will be “Beyond the Label.” Lake Havasu High School FCCLA members will continue to utilize and demonstrate their leadership skills, making important contributions to our community.
